When I heard the name "Cassandra Calandra" I knew it was song. The more I researched this young lady's life the more I fell in love with her. Cassandra was the first Green Burial in Louisiana. Her final resting place is very near to my parents. My heart felt condolences to her family in the untimely loss of their beautiful loved one.
Glen Smith grew up in the greater New Orleans area. His introduction to music occurred literally at birth. Glen’s mother, an orchestra major, taught music both in the home and in the public schools. His earliest memories are of sitting through orchestra rehearsals and waking up to the sound of children taking early morning piano lessons. Glen began participating in a rigorous church music program at the age of six. The youth choir sang every Sunday and toured each summer. The minister of music taught voice and was willing to barter lessons for lawn work. Glen was in.
The migration from classical music to contemporary music began when Glen learned that he could earn tuition money playing a mix of 70s rock and country music. He refers to this period as his Holiday Inn, Ramada Inn circuit days. A miscommunication during class registration at Southeastern Louisiana University sent him to an audition for an opera workshop class. Some college level voice instruction and a thin resume of college opera productions landed Glen a part time job in the New Orleans Opera Chorus and work on the wedding and funeral circuit.
Still playing primarily 70’s era tunes Glen enjoys entertaining friends and performs at restaurants and fund raising events with the occasional wedding thrown in for good measure.
